EMOTIONAL STATE VERBS IN PROGRESSIVE: A CORPUS LINGUISTIC STUDY

ABSTRACT
Semantic is the study of meaning of words and phrases in particular context of the language. This research conducted to ascertain the forms and the meaning of emotional state verbs like and hate in progressive in Corpora (COCA and BNC). Method of the research was descriptive qualitative. The result of the study found that the emotional state verbs like and hate in progressive appeared in corpora. The verb like and hate appeared in present, past, future progressive. The verb like in present progressive also found in corpora but did not appear with the verb hate. The verb like and hate in progressive carried out mixed categories of meanings consist of ‘process change (gradual change) and emotiveness’, ‘temporariness, enjoyment and emotiveness’, ‘temporariness and emotiveness’, ‘enjoyment’, ‘enjoyment and emotiveness’ and ‘temporariness, emotiveness and un enjoyment’. The emotional state verbs in progressive are likely to be acceptable in imaginary works. However, the form is likely to be unacceptable in academic writing.
